De legendarische supercarreeks van Mercedes zoals wij die kennen, begon in 1954 met de 300 SL 'Gullwing' productieauto.
Tegenwoordig is de 'Gullwing' een belangrijk stuk geschiedenis voor het merk en is het de inspiratiebron voor veel sport- en supercars tot op de dag van vandaag. Het beste voorbeeld dat we kunnen noemen is de SLS AMG, maar ook de AMG GT, GTS en GTR, de SL-serie en natuurlijk de SLR McLaren hebben allemaal invloeden van de 300 SL, vandaar de letters 'SL' op de meeste van deze voorbeelden. De SLS AMG is de enige met de beroemde 'Gullwing'-deuren.

Beide auto's delen de filosofie dat prestaties op de eerste plaats komen, waarbij de 300SL een van de eerste echte prestatieauto's van het naoorlogse tijdperk was. De SLS AMG wilde de geest van de originele 300 SL heroveren. Terwijl de 300SL bekend stond om zijn voor die tijd geavanceerde techniek (zoals het brandstofinjectiesysteem en de lichtgewicht constructie), beschikt de SLS AMG over moderne technologieën, zoals de beroemde 6,2 liter V8-motor van Mercedes-Benz en het door AMG ontworpen geavanceerde onderstel.

De SLS AMG trekt de aandacht van verzamelaars en liefhebbers. Hoewel hij misschien nog niet de astronomische prijzen van de 300 SL opeist, stijgt zijn waarde gestaag en zou hij in de toekomst nog meer in waarde kunnen stijgen.

De SLS AMG wordt aangedreven door een 6,2-liter atmosferische V8-motor, bekend als de M159-motor, ontwikkeld door AMG. In dit exemplaar levert hij 563 pk en 479 lb-ft koppel. Hij is gekoppeld aan een zeventraps transmissie met dubbele koppeling die de auto in 3,7 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/u brengt. De topsnelheid bedraagt 317 km/u.

The legendary Mercedes supercar range as we know it started in 1954 with the 300 SL 'Gullwing' production car.
Nowadays the 'Gullwing' is an important piece of history for the brand and it is the inspiration for many sports- and supercars till today. The best example we can name is the SLS AMG, but also the AMG GT, GTS and GTR, the SL-series and of course the SLR McLaren all have influences from the 300 SL, hence the letters 'SL' on most of these examples. The SLS AMG is the only one with the famous 'Gullwing' doors.

Both cars share a performance-first philosophy, with the 300SL being one of the first true performance cars of the post-war era. The SLS AMG aimed to recapture the spirit of the original 300 SL. While the 300SL was known for its advanced engineering for the time (such as its fuel injection system and lightweight construction), the SLS AMG features modern technologies, including Mercedes-Benz's famous 6.2 litre V8 engine and AMG-designed advanced suspension.

The SLS AMG has been attracting attention from collectors and enthusiasts. While it may not command the astronomical prices of the 300 SL just yet, its value has been steadily increasing, and it could see more significant appreciation in the future.

The SLS AMG is powered by a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, known as the M159 engine, developed by AMG. It produces 563 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque in this example. It is attached to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which takes the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is 317 km/h.
